I cannot hear it well in the basement either but there is a fair amount of white noise in the background down there between the blower on the HVAC and the washer/dryer/dehumidifier trio. (NOTE: My house does not have a very large footprint so as the crow flies it is easily within the distance limitations BUT there are plenty of old plaster walls between.)The highest volume setting can be heard one floor up and down but I doubt I would hear it that far away over a hairdryer or vacuum cleaner. (If you have four doors I think each could be assigned a different holiday tune.)Positioned on my second floor the signal still arrives from both the front and back doors. But to its credit, there are plenty of sound options, from the traditional ding-dong and the eight note fancy" ding-dong in the old sitcoms to the William Tell Overture (quite a lot to the sampling as I recall) and numerous Christmas tunes. Maybe I would not be so disappointed if I had paid the price listed today but I paid rather more. The sound is tinny and very plainly electronic - possibly sounding more artificially produced than the rings of the early cell phones. (In the interest of complete disclosure, the volume is turned up to be heard both up and downstairs, but still. Unless children are ringing my doorbell daily while Im out, I think I heard the chime ring a dozen times before the batteries died. Revision 10-Dec2015:The interior chime and the external buttons seem to drain batteries at an alarming rate. I can even add a motion sensor to this system, which is good when a delivery man just puts packages on the doorstep without ringing the bell. If I want a button on the back door, it?s no problem. Multifunctional Battery Doorbell: This wireless portable doorbell is very versatile, you can use it as an ordinary doorbell for home, classroom, office. And don?t let me forget to mention that? its expandable. It still works without the cover (which does not stay on), so I Scotch taped it into place. I had to use a tiny screwdriver (the kind used on eyeglasses) to open it, but in so doing it damaged the little piece used to hold the cover in place. I keep it on my desk on the loft in our home and can hear it even without my hearing aids.I had difficulty inserting the three AAA batteries (not supplied) because I could not pry open the battery cover with my fingernails. Besides, I didn?t like smoke. The bell tones (there are a bunch of different ones to choose from) are shorter and sound much better than the cheaper version. Disconnected it but left it in place for aesthetic reasons. Never miss the postman again with this cheerful Blyss battery powered door bell kit featuring a single distinct chime. I bought this because the old wired doorbell apparently shorted and started smoking.
